The United Rebel Sprint Series made their first appearance of the year, and the NCRA made their first ever appearance at RPM Speedway on Sunday evening, June 5.
Kade Hagens took the early lead in the 25-lap URSS feature, followed by Nate Berry and Holcomb’s Luke Cranston. After a caution period on lap 2, the leaders quickly got into lapped traffic on lap 6. Berry got high in turn 2 on lap 8, allowing Cranston and Jake Bubak to move to second and third. Then as the field came out of turn 4 to the halfway mark, Cranston took the lead. Berry drove off turn 2 on lap 19 to bring out the final caution, giving the field a chance at Cranston. However Cranston was up to the challenge and drove on to victory lane. Bubak finished second, followed by Steven Richardson, Ty Williams and Tracy Hill. Heat race winners were Richardson, Hagens, and Jeremy Huish.
Delbert ‘The Ice Man’ Smith took the early lead in the NCRA Late Model main event and appeared to have the field covered in the 25-lap race. But Chris Kratzer and Manhattan’s Lyle Shepard slowly reeled in Smith with Shepard passing Kratzer for the runner-up spot. Then Shepard drove past Smith on lap 19 and went on to score his 4th win in a row in NCRA action. Heat two victor Smith held off Kratzer for second, with heat one winner Justin Bussell and Jimmy Segraves rounding out the top five.
The 20-lap Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Hobby Stock A-feature Duane Wahrman jumped out to the early lead, but Oakley’s Brady Bencken took over the top spot on lap 6. Shay Simoneau gave chase through a couple late caution periods but Bencken was able to beat the field to the checkers. Simoneau finished second, trailed by Eric Cross, Will Bauer, and heat two winner Duane Wahrman. T.C. McKain and William McBride also won heat races.
The Radke Implement ‘Crazy’ Cruiser division saw the father & son team of Brian & Shaylon Holloway of Osborne win their second feature in a row at the 3/8-mile oval. The Holloways took the lead from Justin Yarmer & Levi Ryan on lap 3 and led the remaining distance for the win. Heat race winners Dalton Bauer & Josh Crombie finished second, followed by Yarmer & Ryan.
The Kansas Antique Racers were also on hand, no results as they just had two exhibition shows for the fans.
It was also Steve King Foundation Night.
The evening’s races were sponsored by Miller Trucking of Lacrosse; Myers Engine Service and S & S Trailer Sales, both of Ness City; Vernie’s Trux and Equipment, and Toys 4 Trux, both of Hays; and Steve’s Electric & Roustabout of Plainville.
Racing action returns to RPM Speedway this Saturday, June 11, with the regular six divisions in action. It will be ‘Pink Night’ so race fans can wear pink to honor the fighters, survivors and those taken. Ellis County Firefighters will also be honored. Race time is 7:00 p.m.
